How are Austria’s researchers doing? In a survey conducted by Spectra, over 3,300 researchers responded to questions about their careers, their working environments, and the role of funding. Austria performed well in terms of internationality and freedom of research. While two thirds of respondents reported being satisfied with their profession, they see room for improvement when it comes to career opportunities for early-stage researchers, the flattening of hierarchies, and society’s attitude towards research. Respondents rated FWF’s funding programs positively, but expressed criticism of the low approval rates for proposals and a percieved lack of transparency on grounds for rejection.
