PhD-/Doctoral Students of the University of Vienna may apply for one exchange semester at the University of California, Berkeley to do research for their doctoral thesis. Students may also audit classes (attend courses without getting a grade/transcript).

The tuition fees at the University of California will be covered by the University of Vienna. Additionally nominated students will receive a scholarship of 2.600 Euro from the University of Vienna for their semester abroad. All other costs must be covered by the students themselves (health insurance, visa costs, living expenses etc.). Auditors must pay a University Services Fee of $750.

Departmental exceptions/restrictions:

the following departments do not participate in the Exchange Program:

  • The UC Berkeley School of Law
  • The Haas School of Business 
  • The Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism
  • The UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare

The School of Information does not accept auditors.

Application deadline:

1. February 2017 for the academic year 2017/18

Application documents:

  • Application form
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Statement of purpose outlining the academic and research interests (max. 2 pages)
  • Two letters of recommendation by professors of the University of Vienna (one of them from the supervisor of your thesis)
  • Transcript or records (English version of the “Sammelzeugnis”, available at the Studien Service Center)
  • Copy of diploma certificates
  • Copy of TOEFL score report (minimum requirements ibT: 90)
  • “Notification of subject for doctoral thesis“ form (Formular „Anmeldung des Dissertationsthemas“)
  • written confirmation from the foreign institution or from the supervising professor at the foreign institution concerning supervision and/or feasibility

The written statement is the most important part of an application and must reflect an advanced level of understanding of the field in which the student's interests lie, appropriate for graduate study at Berkeley. The statement should include a summary of the student's academic preparation and research interests, articulating how the subject matter covered in any courses planned at Berkeley relate to the student's overall academic progress.
